Artist in the museum (1994)
In the 90s, in the absence of sufficient information, artistic strategies were vague, and each project was the discovery of new territories in art, in both its direct and figurative meaning.
In this project, I examined the subject, topical even nowadays, of the artist’s entering museum collections, the museum. The place of shooting was the National Museum of Natural History in Kyiv, where dioramas made in the 50s-80s by famous Ukrainian artists were preserved.
On the pretext of studying dioramas, I was allowed to get into showcases with staffed animals and images of wildlife. This series of pictures was therefore taken through the museum glass. As a result, on the pictures we see an artist that became not only an object of museumification, but also a new figure of the museum life behind the glass.
These pictures were taken by my wife, with a simple snapshot camera. This approach was justified and conformed to the idea. That is to create a myth about pictures taken by visitors in the museum, where an artist is actively settling in the museum space.
This “guerilla” action was reflected in big pictures (90 x 130 cm) that were shown in numerous exhibitions from 1994 to 1997.
